Commissioned by Vitra on the occasion of the Salone del Mobile 2018, Typecasting is a project led by Viennese-born curator and designer Robert Stadler. Various designers – including Konstantin Grcic, Barber and Osgerby, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and Commonplace Studio – were invited to develop ideas for a collective living space under the title ‘The Communal Sofa’.
A digital cast performs a range of communal movements with each other. With grace and physical control they limber up: some stretch into bikram yoga positions, others contort their bodies into the ebullient arabesques of the Cheerleader. But this cast of characters are not your usual dance troupe. Their translucent skins shimmer with digital feeds, resonating light and movement.
They dance together and they dance alone. Furniture provides the surface, the support and the inspiration to perform. Design responds to human movement and humans insinuate themselves on the inanimate. This is a dance to the spirit of design.
